Music Picks of the Week

Check out these tunes for a great week!

"Best Mistake" - Ariana Grande feat. Big Sean
This is the song you're going to want to listen to after a breakup! Also props to Big Sean for the most empowering verse (most likely due to his recent breakup with Glee star Naya Rivera)

"Let It Go" - James Bay
If you haven't already realized, I'm kind of obsessed with Ed Sheeran, and this upcoming artist has a similar sound and feel to him, so of course, I'm hooked.

"OctaHate" - Ryn Weaver
I don't even know where to begin...I LOVE this song!

"Work It Out" - Knox Hamilton
This catchy tune will be stuck in your head all day (and it's not at all a bad thing).

"2 On" - Tinashe feat. Schoolboy Q
I heard this song on the radio the other day, and I haven't stopped listening since. Such a throwback to Cassie's "Me & You!"

"Gimme Something Good" - Ryan Adams
The music video was just released this week, but the song has been on my MVP list for weeks!

"Black Widow" - Iggy Azalea feat. Rita Ora
Yes! Yes! Yes! Don't mess with Iggy or Rita.

Music Picks of the Week

Check out these tunes for a great start to your weekend.

"Bang Bang" - Ariana Grande feat. Jessie J & Nicki Minaj
I will never stop listening to this song! Girl power right here!

"Back Home" - Andy Grammer
Such a fun song! I just want to blast this at the beach.

"Runaway" - sELF
She said lets dance 'til the world explodes and the fifty-foot speakers reach overload. Also awesome cat video!

"Chains" - Nick Jonas
This is the best song from a JoBro that I never knew I needed!

"Seven Nation Army" - The White Stripes
I recently revisited this song, and now I can't stop listening to it. I can't believe I forgot how great it is. Also this was apparently the boy cabin's song at sleep away camp years ago.

"One For the Money" - Escape the Fate
This isn't a song I listen to or probably ever will, but I recently took a little beach vacation with a friend last week, and this is basically one of his favorite songs. So here's a dedication to him, and this will totally get stuck in your head (#sorrynotsorry).

"Flawless (Remix)" - Beyonce feat. Nicki Minaj
I have been playing this on repeat since Sunday. Bey, PLEASE put this on iTunes so I can buy it!

This Yoga is Hot, Hot, Hot!

On my most recent excursion to Austin, TX, I decided to try things that I've never done before. Well, one of the experiences is the Hot Yoga class that I attended with my best friend. She is a member of Wonderlust Yoga (located in Downtown Austin), and she invited me to join her one day. Of course, as a health enthusiast, I accepted her offer, and we went to an afternoon class. As a pilates regular, I figured that I would be able to easily catch on to all the yoga moves. However, I was wrong. My first piece of advice is to attend a beginners yoga class before trying hot yoga because the class moves very quick. I have never seen myself glisten in so much sweat before. My second tip is to bring a big towel because you will be wiping your body off the whole time. Even though I was cursing in my head most the time due to the fact that I was hot and couldn't manage most of the poses, when the class was over, I felt as though I shed a layer of me and turned into a new person. I don't see myself going to another hot yoga class anytime soon, but I'm glad that I got the opportunity to try it out.

Music Picks of the Week

Check out these tunes for a great start to the weekend!

"Heartbreak Girl" - 5 Seconds of Summer
The new album is finally out! This is my favorite of all the songs I don't already own.

"Break The Fall" - Laura Welsh
She will be your new favorite girl voice since Florence Welch (no relation hence different last names)!

"Rollercoaster" - Bleachers
This song makes me want to just jump around and dance. If you like Matt and Kim's "Daylight," you'll enjoy this song!

"Lovers On The Sun" - David Guetta Feat. Sam Martin
Also just a fun summer song!

"Happy Little Pill" - Troye Sivan
I'm still trying to understand this song and how it makes me feel, but it's got a good sound and voice to it. Take a listen.

"Do I Wanna Know?" - Arctic Monkeys
On my recent excursion to Austin, TX, I learned that this song is great to blast while driving through the hill country at night.

"Take Me To Church" - Hozier
This song is my obsession of the week. I couldn't stop listening to it (and I still can't).

Straight Off The Bookshelf

Scroll down to see all the books I read this week.

The Scorch Trials - James Dashner
This is the second book in The Maze Runner series, and in this story, Thomas and the other 20 boys (and girl) who are left journey through another trial to see if they can combat the flare. It sort of reminded me of the second Hunger Games novel, as in it seemed a bit redundant, but it was just as thrilling as the first book.

Buy it here: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/scorch-trials-james-dashner/1100169095?ean=9780385738767

The Vacationers - Emma Straub
This book is a total beach read, and if you were to take one book on vacation with you, this is the one that I highly recommend. The Post family, consisting of an unstable husband and wife, a daughter getting ready to go off to college, and a 28-year-old son dating a 40-year-old woman, goes on a vacation to Mallorca with their close family friends, and drama ensues. Loved every second of reading this!

Music Picks of the Week

Check out these tunes for a great start to your weekend!

"I Wanna Get Better" - Bleachers
As you may or may not know, Jack Antonoff (aka Lena Dunham's boyfriend and guitarist in the band F.U.N.) released a solo album and it's awesome. This is my favorite track.

"Everything I Didn't Say" - 5 Seconds of Summer
Because I don't think I could last a week without posting one of their singles.

"Come Get It Bae" - Pharrell feat. Miley Cyrus (uncredited)
This is truly the song of the summer and Miley is perfect in this!

"Ain't It Fun" - Paramore
Ain't it fun, ain't it fun, baby, now you're one of us?

"She Came To Give It To You" - Usher feat. Nicki Minaj
Any song Nicki is featured in is always a great song.

"Mother & Father" - Broods
This song speaks from the heart.

"Rude" - MAGIC!
I was not a big fan of this song at first, but the hook is pretty catchy, and it makes more since after watching the music video (P.S. Men, don't let this scare you away from asking the father to marry their daughter, it's respectful).

I knew to expect greatness from PHOX, but just listen and be ready to fall in love with their ~phoxy~ sound.

"Weekend" - PRIORY
A perfect song to get you super pumped about the weekend! #TGIF

"Leave The Night On"- Sam Hunt
Every now and then I find an awesome country song that just screams summer, and this is definitely one of them.

"Movie" - Mike Stud
Tell me this isn't going to be stuck in your head for days (because it totally will be)!

"Holding onto Heaven" - Foxes
I'm just slowly falling in love with every song of hers (P.S. Check out her amazing cover of "No Scrubs" at BBC Radio 1's G in the Park).

I'm so going to blast this song all summer long!

I Would Do Anything For Love (A.K.A. My Issue With "Fitspiration" and "Thinspiration")

                                        (Pinned via :http://thinspirationproana.com/proanatips/)

If you are an avid pinner, just as I am, then you may have stumbled upon a few pins marked as "Thinspiration" or "Fitspiration." These usually involve a super well toned body with quotes such as the ones above.

However, these are anything but healthy or inspirational images to help you get in shape, and may actually further you from your goals. It is well known that the secret to weight loss or getting a toned body is NOT avoiding food because that would just lead to craving and binge eating. Also these are very unrealistic images and, for all we know, they could be photoshopped.

I'm not at all saying that these inspirational photos are completely useless, but I want to encourage a sense of awareness about why you are exercising in the first place. Whether you want to lose weight, build a stronger body, or just become more healthier, the most important part is that you love your body and you don't put it through strenuous changes to try to achieve an unattainable goal.

Instead of thinking about getting thinner, consider trying to really love your body the way it is, and then using that motivation to help you make better choices. By doing so, you will want to workout not to lose weight, but because it's really good for your body to stay active. Also you will start eating healthier because it's better for your body to eat natural foods rather than processed foods. So instead of looking up "Fitspiration" and "Thinspiration," look in the mirror and let your body motivate you to a healthier lifestyle.

[Note: If you are trying to lose weight, don't try to lose more than 1-2 pounds per week because just as you are trying to adapt to a new lifestyle, so is your body.]

Straight Off the Bookshelf

What books did I read this week? Scroll down to find out.

Astonish Me - Maggie Shipstead
Astonish Me is a fabulous novel about Joan, a ballerina, who had to quit ballet because she became pregnant with her son, but he ends up just as enthralled in the world of ballet as she was. This is a great, great story and it just keeps unraveling from the first page to the last.

One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories - B.J. Novak
If you aren't familiar with B.J. Novak, he was a writer, co-executive producer, and actor on the American version of The Office, as well as other things. With that said, I had very high expectations for this collection of short stories, and Novak found a way to exceed them all. Just the titles from the stories made me excited to read each individual story. I was laughing and gasping the whole time, and I thought it was a great read!

Heartbeat - Elizabeth Scott
Elizabeth Scott has such a way with with writing raw romance novels that make you feel deep emotions. Heatbeat is about Emma, a girl whose mother's dead body is being kept alive through hospital wires just long enough deliver the baby that's inside her, and all the grief that comes along with this situation. However, this grief brings her closer to one unexpected classmate, even though it furthers her away from everything and everyone else that was once important to her. My Music Picks of the Week

Check out these tunes for a great weekend!

"Often" - The Weeknd: He released this song through Soundcloud (free download!!), and it's just as perfect as all of his other music.

"The Wild Life" - Vacationer: Great indie song with a little reggae twist.

"Life of the Party" - Shawn Mendes: Really great song (Sorry I thought it was a cover of The Weeknd's "Life of the Party," but it's totally not, my mistake).

"Let Go For Tonight" - Foxes: I knew to look forward to great music from Foxes, but this exceeded all expectations!

"Who Loves You" - Jersey Boys Movie Soundtrack: Besides the fact that I thought the whole CD is perfect, and the movie was cast perfectly, this song is the one that I go around singing the most. I apologize that it's just a clip of the song.

"Rag Doll" - Franki Valli & The Four Seasons: I honestly haven't stopped listening to Franki Valli tunes ever since seeing Jersey Boys. The original version of this song is at the end of the movie soundtrack and it's one of my faves.

"Thinking Out Loud" - Ed Sheeran: So I spent my whole week listening to Jersey Boys AND Ed Sheeran. This is by far my favorite off his new album.

My Music Picks of The Week

Check out these tunes for a great start to your weekend!

"Kiss Me Kiss Me" - 5 Seconds of Summer: I just keep falling in love with each and every one of their songs!

"Afire Love" - Ed Sheeran: This is such a sad and beautiful song about Ed's grandfather.

"End of the World" - Dirty Heads: I don't know how anyone wouldn't completely fall in love with this song just from its chorus.

"Can't Help Falling in Love With You (The Voice Cover)" - Christina Grimmie: This is the most beautiful cover of this song that I've ever heard.

"We Won't Go Home" - The Colourist: A perfect upbeat song to get you pumped for anything!

"Real Girls Eat Cake" - The Janoskians: I'm not sure if I actually like this song or just find it hilarious (in the best way of course), but I think it does have a good message that eating is something that everyone finds attractive.

"Me and My Broken Heart" - Rixton: This song sounds like an upbeat version of Rihanna's "Unfaithful," but I love it, and it's always stuck in my head.

Fangirl - Rainbow Rowell
This extremely heartwarming novel is about a girl, Cath, who is obsessed with Simon Snow novels (which are basically the most non-cheesey versions of Twilight-meets-Harry Potter novels that you could ever read about). Cath's fanfiction stories are booming when she has to move to college, and she must face the challenge of whether or not she should move on in her life, like her twin sister has done. It's an awesome story-within-a-story because you get to read excerpts from Simon Snow and Cath's fan fiction in between every chapter!

#TBT: All For Love

If you grew up listening to Radio Disney in the early 2000s as I did, you may or may not remember the infamous song "All For Love" by Stevie Brock. Well, this song was my FAVORITE, and as I got older, I kept trying to remember the song and who it was by (because let's be honest, we all have a soft spot for our favorite childhood songs,  movies, etc). One day during my senior year of high school, I had a brain blast and found the song on Youtube, and for today's #TBT, I am providing the video for everyone to watch:

Flash forward two years later to one January day when I was watching The Ellen Degeneres Show, and she had four boys on the show who made a video about her. They are a really great group called The Cream Pies (named after their favorite pastry from their local donut shop). Ellen interviewed them and then they performed part of their song on the show. While watching, I thought "Wow! This is really creative, and I really want to hear the rest of it," so I found it on Youtube. Well lo and behold, in the video is a clip of Stevie Brock's All For Love video because he is one of the members of The Cream Pies. I was in complete shock after realizing this. So if you are also someone who was wondering what happened to this great childhood star, check out The Cream Pies's wonderful dedication to Ellen Degeneres, and follow their other videos on Youtube (Stevie is also making a comeback in the music industry, so follow his personal Twitter for more updates on that).

What's Up With Those Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia Seeds?

When I was younger and watching TV, there was not a day that I didn't see a commercial for Chia Pets, a plant that you watered and would grow leaves. Well it just so happens that the seeds responsible for these Chia Pets were Chia seeds. With all the health benefits that these seeds offer, it's appropriate that now I can't go grocery shopping without noticing these seeds being advertised and included in many foods/drinks.

Chia seeds are becoming super popular due to their high nutrient density (lots of nutrients and low in calories) and high dietary fiber intake (11 grams per ounce). This helps you absorb more food and it helps you feel fuller faster (also thanks to Tryptophan), which leads to an overall reduced calorie intake.

Chia seeds are also high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids (5 grams per ounce), which can help lower LDL cholesterol, Triglyceride cholesterol, and Total Cholesterol, all helping to improve overall cardiovascular health.

Chia seeds originate from crops of the Aztecs. The word "Chia" is Mayan for "strength," which makes sense because Chia seeds also play an important role in improve bone health. They contain 18% of the daily value for Calcium, and 27% of your daily value for Phosphorous. Both of these minerals help with forming and creating stronger bones.

Other functions of Chia seeds are that they work as an antioxidant, they contain protein (4.4 grams per serving), and they contain Iron, Magnesium, and Zinc.

Chia seeds have become the new super food, and they are very easy to include in your daily diet. Some ways to eat more Chia seeds are:

  • Add them into your oatmeal for breakfast.
  • Blend them into your smoothie.
  • Add them into your salad.
  • Make Chia Pudding, which could be a great breakfast, snack, or dessert.
  • Enjoy some Tea with Chia Seeds, which is a healthier alternative to Bubble Tea

I have seriously been able to wear these colors with everything, and I absolutely love them! Great new makeup makes for an even greater start to summer!
